Dr. Scott A. Dubrul Chiropractor of San Luis Obispo completed the Tahoe Rim Trail 100 Mile Run on Saturday, July 16th 2011, one of the most grueling long distance events in California which began at 5:00 a.m. in Tahoe, California and ended for some at 3pm the following day.
Dr. Scott A. Dubrul Chiropractor of San Luis Obispo completed the 100 mile course in 27 hours and 36 minutes, placing 23rd out of 118. In order to prepare for this accomplishment, his weekly race training included two shorter runs (around 10 miles in 2 hours), and one long run every weekend, ranging from 25 to 35 miles. He’s has now competed 2 Ultra-marathons of 100 mile distance.
This year’s race hosted approximately 118 participants. Seventeen aid stations were available for the runners throughout the course, which follows the middle portion of the Tahoe Rim Trail. The amount of elevation gain in the race was approximately 22,000 feet.
“It was definitely a difficult course” said Dr. Dubrul. “The amount of climbing, the altitude and the cold night weather made it even more challenging. I was happy to have the support of my wife Julie and other friends as well.”
During the race, Dr. Dubrul sustained his energy on a high-caloric carbohydrate mixture, water and Fluid Recovery Drink. Runners usually spend approximately two minutes at each aid station refilling their water, eating random carbohydrates and taking electrolytes.
Dr. Dubrul’s only lingering complaint from the race is his feet: “I felt blisters starting around mile 50, which isn’t comfortable for any runner, much less one who still has 50 miles to go! They’re still a little sore, but I’m actually surprised at how good I feel so soon after the race.”
When asked about competing in this magnitude of a race again, Dr. Dubrul’s response is, “Yes! I can’t wait to get out there again.” Apparently he did not learn his lesson.
Saturday, February 26: The “Hail” and Mud Run!
Saturday was another gorgeous day. The forecast had been for snow of all things, but as I started up Stagecoach road at 9 a.m., the sun was shining and I was in short sleeves.
As I climbed, I saw my buddies Thomas, Jim and Dusty just ending up an earlier run. It’s always good to see friends on the trail. I continued up, power walking of course, past the top of the Cuesta Grade to the trail known as shooters.
As I began my descent, I was absolutely amazed at the view of the seven sisters. I was so enamored in fact, that I stepped on a rock and got a nice ankle sprain in the process. OUCH! I continued on, knowing that the pain would probably subside, as it often does. I climbed back up Morning Glory trail and hooked up to a trail called Pick n Shovel that offers a long and somewhat steep climb back up to the TV Tower Road.
From the road, I dropped back down Morning Glory and into Poly Canyon, which was a muddy mess. After slopping around in the mud for the next hour, I was able to get water at Cal Poly and head back into Poly Canyon and up to the train tracks. It was here where the hail began and kept up for a good 30 minutes.
I climbed from the tracks up to a road called Roller Coasters and did a loop. I ended up running along the tracks until I got on a dirt road that put me back on to stagecoach.
Time was 5 hours exactly. My ankle hurt a bit and I could feel the time, but the training was solid.
Empowering you to express life more fully (even with a sore ankle)!
Saturday, February 12: West Cuesta Grade
Today I ran the beautiful West Cuesta Grade and as you can see by the photo below, it was a gorgeous day. The 6:15 am start was absolutely gorgeous. I ran up to shooters and dropped down into Poly Canyon. Right at the bottom of shooters, I turned onto morning glory trail and climbed the single track. I continued on for about 35 minutes and began the ascent up to TV tower road. I reached the top in about 1.5 hours. I went back to the top of morning glory and took the trail back down to shooters where I crossed the creek and started toward Poly Canyon. The next trail climbs back up to shooters about 3/4 of the way. Super steep quad burner. Once at the top, I went down a trail called the FACE which is a downhill mountain bike trail. Good luck if you try this one. Lastly, I climbed another steep single track back up to TV tower road and went back to the car. All told 3:15 hours and 15 miles. Fantastic! Fluid following helped recovery as it always does. Thanks to the Fluid guys Richard and Dave for sponsoring me.
Today is the first official day of my training. I did a long run today...about 20 miles in four hours. I felt pretty darn good and strong considering that I am on a 21 day purification and cleanse. I have been very concerned about my knee and it held up just fine. My wife is trying to convince me that it would be a great idea to go to Hawaii two weeks before my official run. I don't think it would be wise but then again I will be tapering off of my long runs by then. We'll see.
Beautiful Afternoon Run On West Cuesta Ridge!
Sunday was an absolutely gorgeous day. Contrary to habit, I chose to run in the afternoon rather than the morning to have a bit more time waking up with my family. Besides, this is a rest week for me so my long run was only supposed to be 2 hours. With that in mind, I decided to explore some trails that go off of West Cuesta Ridge. The run started at the top of the grade on the west side (side closer to Pacific ocean). The road climbs up to the first set of TV Towers that you can see on the mountains just west of Cuesta Grade. The climb up to the tower took about 35 minutes and offered beautiful views of the seven sisters as well as the coast all the way past Pismo beach. Looking east gave a view of the snow covered Sierra Nevada mountains.
It was absolutely magical. About 1 ½ miles past the tower, I turned right onto a single track trail which turned out to be about 15 minutes of solid downhill on rocky terrain. Needless to say, I paid close attention. I connected up with the trail known as Morning Glory and hoofed it back up to the tower. This is a grinder of a climb every time I do it. From the tower, I made my way back down to the car. Time was 2:09. I didn’t wear my Garmin so I don’t know the mileage. Once at the car, I mixed up my FLUID recovery drink and refueled!
